How cat years work

The scale used by vets comes from the AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines (updated 2021):

  • First year ≈ 15 human years. A 6-month-old kitten is about 10, a 1-year-old about 15.
  • Second year adds about 9: a 2-year-old cat is roughly 24.
  • Every year after that adds about 4.

So a 12-year-old cat is about 64 in human terms, and a 20-year-old cat is about 96. That is why cats over 10 are considered seniors and should see the vet twice a year.

The four life stages (kitten, young adult, mature adult, senior) matter more than the exact number: each one changes what your cat needs from food, play and checkups.
